One year ago, The City of Calgary, Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation (CSEC) and the Government of Alberta broke ground on Scotia Place. Today, the site is a hub of activity in The Culture + Entertainment District and is on track to become Calgary’s new destination for sports, live music and shared experiences.
Since July 22, 2024, more than 200 workers a day have kept the project moving toward its fall 2027 opening. By early spring 2025, 98% of the site’s underground material had been removed, totaling 308,000 cubic metres, clearing the way for foundation work, which began in March. Now, with 1,100 deep concrete supports in place, the concrete foundations are underway and the future arena is taking shape. Crews are progressing clockwise from the southeast corner to key areas like the loading dock and dressing rooms.
This summer, the site will also connect with Calgary’s District Heating system, supporting long-term sustainability and reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions.
Cranes are in the sky and concrete columns are continuing to take shape as the project aims to reach street level later this year — which means Calgarians will soon see Scotia Place rise above the ground — bringing the city’s next great gathering place to life. From July 21 to October 9, 2025, the intersection of 12 Avenue S.E. and Stampede Trail will be closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic for underground electrical and mechanical work for Scotia Place. Stampede Trail between 13 Avenue and 14 Avenue S.E. will also be closed to vehicles as part of CMLC’s Stampede Trail Redevelopment.
To avoid delays, we recommend:
This intersection closure will require vehicles and pedestrians to use alternative routes. For updates and to help plan your visit to the area, please visit the C+E Access Map at map.cedistrict.com
We appreciate your patience as we build a more connected, accessible and vibrant district for everyone.
