2026 Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon Program - Updated

Making pedestrian crossings safer in Ward 8

Update: February 13, 2026

Thanks to your input, we’re making pedestrian crossings safer: Ward 8’s two newest Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons are coming to 12 Ave/15 St SW and Royal Ave/8 St SW

Thank you to everyone who filled out our survey. These locations have been added to the City’s mobility work plan for 2026, with the aim to have them installed this year.

We are taking your feedback on other locations that could benefit from enhanced visibility and safety measures and will work with the city to see where future flashing beacons could go. If you see or experience any pedestrian crossing safety issues, please report to 311.

Overview

This year, Council approved the budget for each ward to have two RRFBs put in at a location of their choice, and we are looking for your input based on the four options below that have been deemed high priority locations based on 311 requests and traffic studies.

What is an RRFB? An RRFB, or Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon, is a pedestrian activated warning system designed to enhance visibility and safety at crosswalks. These devices are on either side of the street and feature yellow LED lights that flash when activated by pedestrians, increasing driver awareness.

We know road safety is a high priority for Ward 8 residents. Thank you for taking the time to fill out this form to help provide feedback and for us to consolidate information. Statistics through reports submitted to 311 also help our office to push on these types of community concerns.

Please submit your suggestions by 11:00 pm on January 28, 2026.
