Interim uses of City-owned land

Some uses of City land are temporary to ensure land is well utilized in the interim period before put to use to support long-term infrastructure and growth. These spaces provide valuable benefits in the meantime.

Well-loved places like the Glenmore Velodrome, Safety City, Wild Rose Motocross and Highfield Farms exist because The City makes an effort to put land designated for future projects to good use in the interim. These spaces provide opportunities for recreation, education, environmental initiatives and cultural activities, while ensuring the land remains available for important city needs when the time comes.

How temporary use of City-owned land works

The City's leasing and property management team oversees land set aside for future infrastructure or development needs, as well as land left over from past projects. Many of these properties are leased for temporary use by non-profits, businesses and other groups, allowing them to serve a community purpose in the meantime. Others remain as temporary open space until they are needed or a development opportunity arises. In every case, the team works to maximize the use of City-owned land while ensuring it remains available for future public needs.

Efforts are always made to ensure tenants understand that the land will transition to its intended or alternate use. Lease terms are written with the understanding that the use of the land is temporary and will eventually come to an end. The leasing and property management team works closely with project teams to provide tenants with as much notice as possible before this happens.

Finding a new home – What are the options?

For organizations that rely on temporary-use spaces, relocation can be challenging. The City recognizes this, and strives to provide as much advance notice as possible to help smooth the transition. In some cases, The City may be able to share information on other leasing opportunities. However, alternative City-owned spaces are often limited and, because of this, lessees are encouraged to plan ahead and explore options early. Ultimately, securing a suitable space falls to the organization.
