Examples of biodegradable products

  • Products commonly labelled as “biodegradable” or “oxo-gradable” include:
    • Bags
    • Take out containers and plastic cutlery
    • Cleaning sponges and kitchen cloths 
    • Bamboo household products like hairbrushes and toothbrushes
    • Cosmetics
    • Coffee pods 

  • Put into your black cart

Put products labelled as "biodegradable" or “oxo-gradable” into your black cart as garbage.

Why can't this be recycled/composted?

  • Biodegradable and oxo-gradable products cannot go in the blue bin. They are a plastic material mixed with other additives that are not recyclable. If combined with other regular plastic recyclables, these biodegradable materials will reduce the quality of the new materials that can be produced.
  • These items also cannot be composted as they break down into smaller pieces of plastic-based material impacting the quality of finished compost.
