City Council and school board trustee elections.

City elections overview


Elections activities at the municipal (city) government level include:

  • General election of City Council members (mayor and councillors) every four years.
  • General election of public school board trustees for the Calgary Board of Education and separate school board trustees for the Calgary Roman Catholic Separate School District No. 1 every four years.
  • By-elections for City Council members and school trustees as needed.
  • Vote of the electors on questions or bylaws directed by Council.
  • Senate elections administered under the Alberta Senate Election Act and provincial referendum questions administered under the Referendum Act when directed to occur with a general election.
  • Verification of petitions and requests to form a business improvement area administered under the Municipal Government Act and Business Improvement Area Regulation.
  • Requests to form a business improvement area administered Business Improvement Area Regulation.

    The City of Calgary previously conducted a census. The census program has been discontinued.

    Elections Calgary independently and impartially conducts elections for City Council (mayor and ward councillor) and public and separate school board trustees.

  • Petitions

    A petition is a collection of signatures from a group of citizens in support or opposition to an issue within City Council’s jurisdiction.

    Petition criteria are set out in the Municipal Government Act and sufficiency is determined by the City Clerk.

  • Ward Boundary Commission

    On June 6, 2023, Calgary City Council directed Administration to create a Ward Boundary Commission.

    The Commission will review the effectiveness of Calgary’s 14‑ward system.
