How to dispose of election signs
How to dispose
There are three ways to dispose of election signs.
Small quantities of election signs
-
Extend the life of this item by reusing, selling, or donating
Reuse signs by:
- Using for other activities (e.g. art projects, storage boxes)
- Giving to family and friends
- Posting on online websites like Facebook Marketplace
-
Put into your black cart
Put broken down election signs into your black cart as garbage.
Large quantities of election signs
-
Take to a City Eco Centre
Take plastic elections signs to a City Eco Centre for free recycling – if you bring other garbage, charges will apply.
There is no cost for dropping off clean, separated loads of the following materials for recycling:
- Corrugated plastic-like election signs (remove stakes and wood)
- Paper and cardboard
- Plastic sleeve election signs
Group these different materials in separate piles in your vehicle to make it easier to sort at the Eco Centre.
If you do not separate materials, leave stakes attached and/or bring other garbage with you, you will be charged:
- The regular basic sanitary waste (garbage) fee of $113/tonne or;
- The minimum charge of $25 if the load is under 250 kg
Why can’t I recycle election signs in the blue cart?
Election signs need to be collected separately from other recyclables and cannot go in the blue bin. These “flat” pieces of plastic are not able to be sorted at the recycling facility and end up contaminating the other recyclables.
