Message from the City Manager

Keeping Calgarians on the move requires a multi-faceted approach that includes investment in safe, affordable public transportation, and thoughtful planning and design of our road networks and infrastructure. We know the way Calgarians get around the city is constantly evolving. We want to ensure local destinations can be accessed through a variety of options, and communities and businesses benefit from greater connectivity.

During November’s budget discussions, we heard from many Calgarians about the desire to expand the city’s 5A (Always Available for All Ages and Abilities) network, and Council responded by committing $40 million to advance this initiative. We have already realized many impactful projects that employ 5A fundamentals and principles, and others are underway to fulfill citizen and Council direction. This critical funding will contribute to creating a mobility network that is welcoming and accommodating to people of all backgrounds and abilities, as well as establishing important community connections.

We are working hard to upgrade, build, and maintain pathways, bikeways, roadways, and sidewalks to provide safe, accessible, affordable, year-round options for transportation and recreation for all Calgarians, but keeping Calgarians moving is more than about infrastructure. It’s about doing our part to make sure all Calgarians have access to the same resources and opportunities and can fully participate in their communities. Although this is a long-range plan, there are several projects already in place that contribute to our diverse mobility network. This issue of Better Every Day highlights stories from Calgarians who share how they travel around our great city and offers a few insights for the future.
