Non-potable water irrigation
In an effort to conserve our precious water resources and reduce our environmental impact, The City irrigates some parks around Calgary with non-potable water.
What is non-potable water?
Non-potable water is water that is not treated to drinking water standards and is not fit for human consumption. The City uses several sources of non-potable water such as raw (untreated) water from the Bow River and storm water from run off stored in holding ponds for some irrigation of parks. This saves resources used in treating water.
What parks in Calgary use non-potable water?
The City is looking for sites that can be designed to use non-potable water for irrigation. Currently, seven large sites are using either untreated river water (Bowness Park, Prince's Island, Baker Park), well water (Valley View) or storm water from run off (Inland Athletic Park, Inverness Storm Pond, Nose Creek Recreation Centre).
There are currently seven parks that are irrigated with non-potable water.
