Mandate Overview
The Gender Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Subcommittee is a subcommittee of the Social Wellbeing Advisory Committee. The subcommittee is tasked with providing advice to Administration and City Council (via the Social Wellbeing Advisory Committee) related to the advancement of the City Service Delivery actions of the Gender Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy, as well as initiatives identified by the Social Wellbeing Advisory Committee that provide opportunity to advance gender equity.

Key Responsibilities
For Members:
- Attendance at monthly meetings and occasional special events.
- Review pre-meeting materials and be prepared to actively participate in meetings.
- Provide thoughtful advice on City initiatives utilizing an intersectional lens to advance gender equity.
- Share information and request additional perspectives from community connections as appropriate.
For the Chair and/or Vice-Chair:
- Prepare agenda with support from Administration.
- Chair monthly meetings.
- Participate in annual recruitment selection process.
Eligibility, Qualifications & Skills
Required:
- Currently living in Calgary
- At least 18 years of age
Experience & Skills:
- Expertise, including lived experience, of the needs of women and gender-diverse people across intersectional identity factors including race and ethnicity, Indigenous identity, income, immigrant status, age, (dis)ability, sexual orientation and gender identity.
- Expertise on advancing gender equity using an intersectional approach.
- Expertise on the collection and use of disaggregated data, specifically focused on gender and inequity issues.
- Expertise on public policy, specifically equity policies across social, economic and political spheres.
- Expertise conducting gender-based analysis plus (GBA+).
- Expertise on advancing political representation, participation and voice of women and gender-diverse people.
- Experience with evaluation and the development of performance measures.
Term Of Appointment
Appointments are for two-year terms.
Meetings
- When: 2nd Thursday of each month from 4-5:30pm (excluding July and August).
- Frequency: Maximum of 10 meetings per year, September to June.
- Where: Currently all meetings are held virtually.
Time Requirement
For Members:
- 10 hours/year on meeting preparation (e.g., reviewing provided materials to prepare for meetings).
- 15 hours/year in meetings (e.g., maximum of 10 – one and a half hour monthly meetings).
- Potential attendance at occasional special events.
For the Chair and/or Vice-Chair:
- 5–10 additional hours/year for email correspondence and agenda preparation.

For attendance at in-person meetings:

Membership |

Responsibilities |

Report to |
The Social Wellbeing Advisory Committee via the Subcommittee chair. |
Meetings |
Meetings will be held no more than monthly, as required, but no less than once per quarter. |
Quorum |
Greater than 50% of a minimum number of members, which is five+. |
Term |
Members will serve a two-year term with the potential for a second consecutive term. In the final month of a term, members must indicate to the Subcommittee chair their interest in continuing with the subcommittee or their decision to step off. |
Duration |
The Subcommittee will remain in place until December 2026. This timeframe may be extended as approved by the Social Wellbeing Advisory Committee. |
Resources |
City Administration representative from Community Strategies will act as a resource to the Subcommittee. |
Responsibilities
The Gender Equity, Diversity and Inclusion subcommittee’s responsibilities include providing advice to City Council (via the Social Wellbeing Advisory Committee) or to Administration related to:
- The advancement of the City Service Delivery actions in the Gender Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy.
- New projects identified by the Social Wellbeing Advisory Committee chair and Sub-committee chair that provide an opportunity for advancing gender equity.
Reports to:
The Gender Equity, Diversity and Inclusion subcommittee reports to the Social Wellbeing Advisory Committee.
