These activities will help youth build a positive view of themselves and recognize their strengths while thinking about media. They can be done alone or with friends over a video chat such as Skype, Zoom, Facetime, etc.

Mindfulness Activity

Trivia question: How many colours are in a rainbow?

  • A) 10
  • B) 5
  • C) 7

Mindfulness Activity:

  • Find your pulse on your neck or your wrist.
  • Count how many times your heart beats in 15 seconds. (You can get help from a parent or use a timer).
  • Now breathe fast 10 times. Take your pulse again.
  • Which time was higher?

Daily Forecast

Supplies:

  • lined paper
  • pen or pencil

Have your child write out what they expect their day to look like. They can break the day down, writing each half hour down the left side of the page (e.g. 9:00 – 9:30 a.m., 9:30-10:00 a.m., etc.).

Tell them that they must plan at least

  • One thing active
  • One thing creative
  • Two sections for quiet time (reading, drawing, nap etc.)
  • Five sections for snacks/ meals (you can help with this).

Have them write their activity plans to the right of the time slots. Once they finish, put their day forecast somewhere where they can easily see it throughout the day (e.g. on the fridge or the wall in their bedroom).

Weather Report

Supplies:

  • blank paper
  • pencil or pen
  • pencil crayons
  • markers
  • crayons

Have your child sit and look out the window or go sit outside.

Ask them if they see anything going on outside. Are there people walking? Any animals? Is the weather hot or cold? Is it sunny, cloudy or snowy?

Have them draw what they see outside like they are a weather reporter! Also, have them draw and suggest some activities that would be good in this weather (e.g. biking, sledding, playing at the park, etc.).

Interviews

Watch the video for help on this activity.

Supplies:

  • paper
  • pencil or pen

Help them come up with 5 questions to ask everyone. Here are some questions to try:

  • What’s your favourite colour?
  • What’s your favourite animal?
  • Do you like or dislike vegetables?
  • What do you want to be when you grow up?
  • What’s your favourite animal?

Have them write down all the answers, including their own answers to the questions. Are there any that are the same? What do you have in common?

Family News Network

Supplies:

  • notes and drawings from the previous activities

Have your child pretend that they are the host of their very own news channel. You and other family members/friends will be the live audience.

Help your child put together a family news special using the information they collected from The Weather Report and Interviews activities above.

They can post their weather report picture and pretend they are a weather reporter. Have them tell you about the weather and what the best activity is.

They can also share what they found from the interviews about their family members/friends.

Maybe they can suggest an activity that everyone would like to do together (e.g. play a board game, sing a song together, watch a movie).

Review Questions

Ask your child:

  • How does it feel to notice everything going on around you?
  • Do you think the news is important? Why or why not?
  • What is one thing you did today that you want to try again?
