Weather
Weather is short-term or temporary changes in the atmosphere. Weather reports look at things like temperature, moisture, cloudiness, visibility, wind speed and barometric pressure at a specific time and place. Climate is different from weather because it looks at long-term changes in the atmosphere. Climate measures an average of changes in the weather over many years (sometimes 30 years or more!).
Calgary’s weather is always changing, affecting our world in different ways. What are some issues for humans with weather and climate change? Do you think weather and climate impact our wildlife too?
Impact on humans
- Wildfires
- Flooding
- Building damage
- Roadway damage
- Change in natural resources availability
Impact on wildlife
- Habitat destruction
- Lack of food, shelter and resources
- Changes to migration patterns (wildlife might not migrate as far south or might not migrate at all)
- Difficulty surviving as access to food and habitats change
Nasa has observed that the Earth is getting warmer. Think about these questions every time you notice the weather:
- Does the Earth getting warmer create problems for humans and wildlife?
- What will happen if our earth keeps getting warmer over time? Can humans and wildlife survive?
- Are there any positive changes we can make to help stop climate change?
