Wellness day 3 grades K - 3 learning activities
These activities are meant to support calming and self-control in children. Trivia questions help catch focus, then that focus is used to complete a mindfulness activity that supports mental health and resiliency.
Duration: 60 - 90 Minutes
Mindfulness activity 1
Time: 5 minutes
Trivia question: Think of the answer in your head. How many legs does a spider have?
Mindfulness activity:
- Slowly raise your hands in the air, and take a deep breath in.
- Hold it there for 3-5 seconds.
- Now slowly lower your hands to the floor and breathe out as much as you can.
"I Can Do It" Ball Pass
Time: 5-10 minutes
Supplies: ball
- Sit on the floor about 2 metres away from your child and stretch your legs like the letter V.
- Roll the ball back and forth.
- When your child catches the ball, have them tell you something they are good at. When you catch the ball, tell your child something you are good at.
- Do this for 2-3 minutes, then roll the ball back and forth telling each other things you want to be good at.
- Next, roll the ball back and forth and list people who seem confident (they could be real people like teachers or friends, or fictional people like characters from books or movies).
If you have enough space, you can also play this game by throwing or kicking the ball.
Freeze Dance
Time: 10 – 15 minutes
Supplies: a device to play music
- Turn on upbeat music, and dance.
- Have your child freeze in place when you stop the music.
- If they move when the music is stopped, give them a simple task like 5 jumping jacks or singing a short song like “I’m a Little Tea Pot”. Then start the music again.
- Let your child to be silly, have fun and try new moves with confidence!
Mindfulness Activity 2
Time: 5 minutes
Trivia question: Think of the answer in your head. What do caterpillars turn into?
Mindfulness activity:
- Slowly raise your hands in the air, and take a deep breath in.
- Hold it there for 3-5 seconds.
- Now slowly lower your hands to the floor and breathe out as much as you can.
Self-Portrait
Time: 15 – 20 minutes
Supplies:
- Coloured paper
- Glue
- Blank paper
- Cardboard or canvas
Have your child create a self-portrait by ripping pieces of coloured paper and gluing it onto a blank piece of paper, cardboard, or canvas. Add in patterned paper, magazine paper, newspaper or anything else your child might find interesting.
Name Poem
Time: 5 – 10 minutes
Supplies:
- Blank Paper
- Pencil
- Markers
- Have your child write their name vertically down the left side of a blank piece of paper.
- Then, have them write a word or sentence that describes themselves for each letter in their name.
- When they have finished their poem, ask them to read it to you.
- Then, they can decorate their page with a border and pictures that show their favourite things.
Line Jump
Time: 5 – 10 minutes
Supplies:
- Tape
- String
- Jump rope or something else you can use to mark two lines.
- Find a long space in your home, like a hallway or an open area. Make a line on the floor (you can use masking tape, string, a jump rope or whatever you have).
- Ask your child to put another marker (tape, string, etc.) at a spot where they know they can jump to. Let them know that this is what confidence is – being sure you can do something.
- Now, have them jump! They can try different types of jumping – a two-foot hop, a leap, or a frog jump.
- Have them experiment with the distance of their marker, to see if they can build confidence to jump even further.
Mindfulness Activity 3
Time: 5 minutes
Trivia question: Think of the answer in your head. What is the fastest animal on land?
Mindfulness activity:
- Slowly raise your hands in the air, and take a deep breath in.
- Hold it there for 3-5 seconds.
- Now slowly lower your hands to the floor and breathe out as much as you can.
Confidence Cheerleader
Time: 5 – 10 minutes
- Ask your child to think about a time when they tried their best, but still failed.
- How did it feel? What did they think about it? What do they think they can try differently next time?
- Next, work together to come up with a cheer that could build confidence next time your child is facing a difficult task.
- Cheer it together three times.
