Winter All-Terrain Wheelchair Pilot

Park visitors can now pre-book an All-Terrain Wheelchair (ATW) for free to explore select parks with an individual that could benefit from using a mobility device. The All-Terrain Wheelchair (ATW) are available at North Glenmore Park and Prairie Winds Park. 

An All-Terrain Wheelchair is a special type of wheelchair designed to allow users to visit places and landscapes that would otherwise be inaccessible. These wheelchairs have extra-wide wheels or skis to increase stability on uneven or unsteady terrain, including sand, snow, and water.

Caregivers can request a wheelchair with skis or with wheels to use while exploring the park.

See below for information about where you can use an ATW in the pilot parks and for booking information.

Guidelines for use of ATW

  • Individuals using the ATW must be no taller than four foot seven inches (4' 7") tall and weigh less than 286 pounds.
  • Booking an ATW is free, must be completed at least a day in advance and requires you to login to your City of Calgary Live and Play account.
  • ATWs can be used between the hours of 9 am and 3:30 pm for a period of up to three hours. 
  • Caregivers are required to ensure that ATW is never in uncontrolled motion or sliding/rolling down a hill. 
  • ATW can be used:
    • Within the boundaries outlined on the provided maps (see below) within the park boundaries
    • On rinks (with wheels) and on snow (wheels and skis)
    • On paved or gravel pathways
  • ATW can’t be used:
    • Outside of the park boundaries
    • On steep slopes
    • Tall grass/natural areas

 

Bookings need to be made 24 hours in advance. A reservation confirmation and booking reminder will be emailed to you.

How to book an ATW

To reserve an ATW, login to your City of Calgary Live and Play account or create an account. While there is no cost to book an ATW, you are required to complete the form and follow the instructions on the Live and Play site.

Once you login to Live and Play, navigate to “Rentals & Bookings” and then “All-Terrain Wheelchairs.” From here you will be able to search for availability by date, time and park.
