Foothills Athletic Park Pickleball courts

We’re adding 12 new dedicated pickleball courts at Foothills Athletic Park in summer 2024, providing more ways for Calgarians to play this popular emerging sport.

Background

Following the removal of the end-of-life Volleydome in 2023, we uncovered non-functional tennis courts at this location. An investment will allow us to redevelop these courts for public pickleball use, creating some of Calgary’s first dedicated outdoor pickleball courts available to the public.

The City will operate the pickleball courts using existing Foothills Athletic Park staff, allowing for a new recreation amenity without increasing operating costs.

In 2024, the courts will be available to the public on a first-come, first-served drop-in basis. Beginning in 2025, these new courts will use The City’s booking system to align with current tennis and pickleball courts, providing a consistent method of access for all Calgarians.

The new pickleball courts will be temporary until funding for the Foothills Multisport Fieldhouse becomes available, as the site is required for the Fieldhouse project. Once built, the Foothills Multisport Fieldhouse will accommodate pickleball via its gymnasia courts. The current design estimates the gymnasia can be configured with up to 36 pickleball courts.

Increasing the supply of pickleball courts will contribute to The City’s response to growing demand for this emerging sport. The City of Calgary owns and operates over 160 outdoor tennis courts throughout Calgary. Most of these courts have been adapted for users to play either tennis or pickleball.

Impact

Parking alongside the former Volleydome site may be impacted during construction. Detour signage will be in place if required.
