Shaganappi Point bunker renovation

Shaganappi Point Golf Course is embarking on a full-scale renovation of its bunkers.

Project overview

Most golf courses typically renovate their bunkers every 15 to 20 years for functional reasons — i.e., to repair/improve drainage, install modern bunker liners, remove sand build-up, replace contaminated sand, etc. — as a means to enhance playability and eliminate maintenance challenges.

Currently, Shaganappi has 51 bunkers encompassing approximately 65,000 square feet of total bunker area. The total square footage of sand throughout the course could be significantly reduced without negatively affecting interest, challenge, and the overall presentation of the course.

Benefits

  • Improve conditions

Reduce the total square footage of bunkers throughout the course to improve conditions while lowering maintenance costs and creating a more distinctive aesthetic.

  • Create a more challenging course

Reconfiguring hazards to create a course that challenges better golfers while still offering an enjoyable experience for players of all skill levels.

  • Enhance playability and interest

Regrading specific green surrounds to introduce more short-cut turf around green complexes to enhance both playability and interest.

  • Provide strategic angles

Adjusting fairway mowing patterns, where appropriate, to improve playability for most golfers and provide strategic angles for thoughtful shot-making.

Impact to golfers

This renovation will have a minimal impact on course play. We will aim to avoid shutting down holes completely and instead may use temporary greens while specific holes are under construction.

Project timeline

Final details and timelines are being finalized and will be available soon.
