Life Safety Equipment - Required Qualifications for Tradespeople

Special fire suppression systems:
- portable fire extinguishers
- fire alarm and voice communication systems
- sprinkler systems
- water-based fire protection systems
- integrated fire protection and life safety systems.
This also provides guidance regarding the qualifications of service providers for the cleaning of commercial cooking equipment exhaust systems and certification of contractors that conduct installations, removals, maintenance, and repairs of aboveground and underground storage tank systems.

Fire Alarm and Voice Communication Systems
In order to install, test or perform maintenance a person must hold an approved certificate of training from:
- A public post-secondary educational institution OR
- The Canadian Fire Alarm Association (CFAA)
To check your tradesperson’s qualifications to work on your fire alarm and voice communication systems:

Commercial Cooking Equipment Exhaust Systems
To perform maintenance on commercial cooking equipment exhaust systems, a person must have a certificate verifying that they have completed an approved course of training in duct-cleaning procedures.
