Educational partners and youth programs
There are a variety of community groups who are committed to providing water education opportunities for both Calgary schools and youth organizations and we are proud of our partnerships with each of them:
CAWST Youth Wavemaker
The Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology Youth Wavemakers Program provides a variety of classroom resources and project support linking global and local water issues. Resources include lesson plans, games, activities, videos and action planning for grades K-12.
Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS)
CPAWS' Water Rangers Program offers students an interactive journey down the Bow River, where they will learn about the importance of water in our lives.
Elbow River Watershed Partnership (ERWP)
The ERWP Bow and Elbow River Watershed Field school program is a curriculum-based field study for students in grades 8, 9 and Biology 20. Travelling by bus, students monitor the Elbow River from its pristine headwaters in Kananaskis Country to Calgary. Students test the water for a variety of abiotic factors and examine biotic features at key locations. Students also study the land-use impacts on this aquatic ecosystem. The ERWP website also offers excellent youth-education materials.
Green Calgary
Green Calgary offers educational programming to schools and community groups year round. The Water for Life Program allows children to explore just how water supports life on our planet, and what actions they can take to protect our water resources.
River Watch
RiverWatch helps science classes explore their local river during a one day raft-float trip. Along the way, students make shoreline stops to conduct water chemistry and biology tests with the aim of answering the question: "How healthy is your river?" Student's day on the river also includes a stop at the wastewater treatment plant.
Yellow Fish Road
Yellow Fish Road is a national environmental education program created by Trout Unlimited Canada. The program's goal is to improve Canadian's understanding of the importance of river health though stormwater management. Visit the Yellow Fish Road website to learn how your students can participate in their stormwater programming.
Other Youth Water Programs
These programs also provide teachers with curriculum-based materials that are designed by subject matter experts, for a variety of age groups:
Alberta Science Network
Scientists and Engineers-in-the-Classroom program provides curriculum-related presentations to classrooms from scientists, engineers and topic experts. These visits feature hands on activities and engaging demos to get students excited about science.
Caring for our watersheds
Caring for our Watersheds is an environmental contest for Grades 7 to 12 students that asks the question: What can you do to improve your watershed?
EcoSchools
The City of Calgary has partnered with the Alberta Council for Environmental Education (ACEE) to deliver the EcoSchools program in Calgary, which is designed to educate K-12 students about climate change and environmental education.

Environment Canada Freshwater
In addition to free, downloadable resources and fact sheets for teachers, Environment Canada's freshwater website provides information on the nature of water, water legislation, water management, and water and culture.
Exploring the Environment: Water Quality
NASA's Classroom of the Future program challenges high school students with real-life problems. Students are encouraged to use their problem-solving skills and Internet-based data to propose and defend a solution. A teacher's guide is available. Visit Exploring the Environment. To access the water quality module, click on 'Modules and Activities' and then 'Water Quality'.
Project WET
Project Worldwide Water Education (WET), is an international, interdisciplinary water education program for formal and non-formal education of students ages 5 to 18. They publish a variety of teacher resources.
Stream of Dreams
Stream of Dreams uses art-based programming to deliver environmental education, helping people to understand their connections to water and fish habitat. Learn more about their program.
