Peace officers are regulated by the Province of Alberta, and approved organizations such as municipalities, health authorities, and provincial agencies employ peace officers. Different peace officer groups have different duties depending on who they work for.

What types of peace officers does The City of Calgary have?

Community Safety peace officers
Enforce city bylaws, patrol communities, respond to 311 service requests and other duties to ensure public safety. Community Safety peace officers include the Vulnerable Persons Team who respond to encampments and connect the unhoused population with support.

Transit Public Safety
Enforce city Bylaws, patrol on and around transit, enforce fare, execute warrants and ensure operator and public safety.

Vehicle for Hire
Regulate taxis, rideshares and limousines to ensure drivers and vehicles meet City requirements.

Business Safety & Specialty Operations
Inspect and license businesses to help protect public safety and reduce risks. Teams include the Traffic Safety Team who manage traffic safety issues and the Problem Properties Team who address land and/or building sites with recurring safety or bylaw issues.

Community Outreach Team
Work with outreach agencies, enforcement partners and internal partners to connect the unhoused population with the appropriate resources.
