Get prepared for emergencies
December emergency preparedness tip: Deck the halls (safely) this holiday season.
Here are some simple steps you can take to prepare your home and vehicle for a safe and enjoyable holiday season:
- Test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detector to ensure they’re working properly.
- Inspect your holiday lights and discard any that show wear. Use indoor-specific extension cords for your tree lights, and don’t overload them. Avoid attaching multiple extension cords together as this can pose a fire hazard. Keep candles away from flammable materials.
- If you’re travelling during the holidays, keep the heat on in your house at a lowered level to reduce the risk of frozen pipes. Keep an eye on weather forecasts and alerts. If there is a winter storm coming, stay off the roads or delay travel until the conditions improve.
- Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle stocked with essentials like non-perishable food, a first aid kit, small shovel, flashlights and blankets. Having a vehicle emergency kit can make all the difference to keep you and your passengers safe if you get stranded. Learn what you can keep in a vehicle emergency kit.
- Check your insurance policy to understand exactly what it covers. If you have any questions about your policy, contact your insurance advisor. Having adequate insurance can give you peace of mind whether you’re at home or away during the holidays.
Have a joyful and safe holiday.
