Benefits of our adaptive programs
Adaptive programs empower you to take part in recreational activities that have been altered to increase participation and success.
Our programs offer a supportive environment that help you explore new activities or experiences, build connections and socialize with your peers.

Fall registration dates
- 6 a.m. — Online (virtual waiting room opens at 5:30 a.m.)
- 8:30 a.m. — By calling the Customer Service Centre at 403-268-3800 (option 1)
- During business hours — At any City-operated Aquatic & Recreation or Arts facility
Types of adaptive programs
You can register online, in person at our Recreation facilities, or by calling
403-268-3800.
If you need assistance during a program, you are required to bring your own aide. Please read the support workers/aide expectations document before signing up for a program.

Our instructors will provide assistance in using a variety of specialized tools and selecting materials to make cards for any occasion. All supplies are provided. Assistance will be provided as needed.

Prerequisite: None

Take part in a supervised adapted hockey program intended for participants with little to no mobility. These non-competitive lessons are open to all individuals and focus on inclusivity and teamwork. Sled and stick will be provided if participants would like to try it, but is not necessary to use.
Age: 4+ years
Prerequisite: None

These lessons are intended for those with cognitive impairments. You will learn basic skills needed to skate in a safe and welcoming environment. Parents, guardians and aids are encouraged to get on the ice to support participants.
Ages: 12+
Prerequisite: None

A supervised weight room program that will be tailored to your individual needs and goals. Workouts are mobility friendly.
Age: 18+
Prerequisite: New participants must complete a PARmed-X, Adapted Fitness Assessment registration form and require a fitness assessment ($66) before the first class. Returning participants must complete a PARmed-X every 12 months

While wearing a blindfold, you will try to block and score with a ball that has bells inside to refine your sense of hearing. All equipment will be provided.
Age: 13+
Prerequisite: Ability to get down to and up from the floor and spend time on your knees

Through drills, activities and scrimmages, you will learn the basics of sledge hockey. These non-competitive lessons are open to all individuals and focus on inclusivity and teamwork. Sled and stick will be provided.

About our adaptive program instructors
Our instructors are qualified and experienced to lead effective and safe adapted programs. They have wide knowledge bases and enjoy working with people of all ages and abilities.
Our instructors ensure that classes are always fresh and engaging for new and returning participants. In some programs, we have volunteers that will help provide more opportunities for socialization, assistance and inclusion.

What are adaptive programs like?
Each of our programs are inclusive to everyone of all abilities in a fun and positive atmosphere. Classes will prioritize creating a supportive environment for participation and skill building. Our instructors will modify techniques as necessary to ensure everyone is participating to the best of their ability.
Fitness classes will focus on your current abilities and help improve your movement and strength. You can also try out a sport such as sledge hockey, goal ball or wheelchair basketball to grow community and teamwork. We also offer many drop-in activities where you can try something new to you.
Aides are welcome to join where they are needed to help you succeed.

- Positive attitude and willingness to try new activities

- Clean indoor shoes that have not been worn outside
- Comfortable clothing
- An aide/attendant if required
