Trees and climate

The project worked closely with Parks’ Urban Forestry and Conservation team to assess the neighbourhood’s tree canopy by reviewing  root, trunk, branch, and bud health.

Whenever trees are removed, a community restoration plan is developed to improve the health of the canopy. Extensive work was done to minimize the number of trees impacted by construction and adjust the design to save mature trees wherever possible. Of the 177 trees inventoried as part of this project, approximately 99 trees needed to be removed and replaced.

We are planting more than 100 northern blaze white ash, northern acclaim honey locust, and American elms throughout Marda Loop because they thrive in urban locations, need little maintenance, and have a high, shade-providing canopy. Younger trees will help replenish and improve the older canopy’s overall health.

Marda Loop Main Streets is one of the first City projects to incorporate a Climate Risk and Resilience Assessment into its design and construction phases to address and mitigate future climate considerations and risks.

As a result, we incorporated recommended features including adding a variety of plants, shrubs, grass and better soil to support the refreshed urban tree canopy, installing public water fountains, permeable pavers and more.

Background

The City has developed a Streetscape Master Plan for Marda Loop based on citizen feedback, technical analysis, and financial considerations.

The concept of a Main Street reflects the integration between public space, business, and people. The plan supports the needs identified by the community and provides a vision that guides the detailed design and construction phases.

The vision encompasses numerous considerations, including:

  • Design for pedestrian safety
  • Enhanced interaction between different mobility modes
  • Creation of placemaking opportunities
  • Provision of trees and site furnishings for comfort
  • Design to support local businesses
  • Connection to park spaces and amenities
  • Transit and laneway access improvements
