Connecting people to places 50 Avenue S.W. Improvements

Safer, easier travel for everyone, whether you walk, bike, take transit or drive.

Project overview

We are making 50 Avenue S.W. easier to use this summer and fall.

This project improves connections from Crowchild Trail S.W. to 14a Street S.W. It makes it easier to move between neighbourhoods, parks and schools, supporting access to key destinations, like Glenmore Athletic Park, River Park and Sandy Beach.

Improvements include a continuous pathway from Sandy Beach to Mount Royal University and upgrading the street for everyone who uses it.

How this improves getting around

  • Better connections

Extending the multiuse pathway from 19 Street S.W. to 22 Street S.W., creating easier access between Sandy Beach, River Park and Mount Royal University.

  • Safer crossings

New traffic signal at 20 Street S.W. and curb extensions along 50 Avenue S.W., reducing crossing distances and improving visibility for people walking.

  • Smoother, safer streets

Replacing pavement, updating streetlights and repairing sidewalks on from 14a Street S.W. to Crowchild Trail S.W. improving comfort and safety for all users.

Council's priority focus areas

How we’re making progress on Council focus areas:

Reliable and sustainable infrastructure
Repaired roadway surface, sidewalks, and curbs and gutters on 50 Avenue S.W. help ensure our City roads are well-maintained and reliable for years to come.

Functional transportation network
Completing the missing pathway connection, to provide a route from Sandy Beach to Mount Royal University. This creates an accessible and reliable option for different modes of transportation.

Project location

The 50 Avenue S.W. improvements run from Crowchild Trail S.W. to 14a Street S.W.

Construction

Construction began in May and will continue through late fall 2026.

Minimizing construction impacts

We know construction affects your daily travel. We are working to reduce disruption to people and businesses as much as possible.

  • Block-by-block schedule

Work will happen in segments, to limit delays and disruptions.

  • Maintaining front door access

Keeping front door home access with wooden ramps. Any disturbances to front yards will be repaired to the original state.

  • Temporary transit stops

Adjusting stop locations so your trip stays on track.

  • Clear detour signs

Guiding you around construction with clear, visible routes, whether you are walking, wheeling or driving.

  • Parking

    Temporary parking restrictions and accommodations

  • Parks will stay open

Spaces like Glenmore Athletic Park, Sandy Beach Park and River Park Off-Leash Area will stay open. Please follow on-site detour signage for access.

  • Schools stay accessible throughout the year

Construction near Central Memorial High School and Alternative High School will take place during the summer months, where possible, to minimize impacts.

What to expect

As construction progresses, we anticipate several impacts in the area, including:

  • Work hours: 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday to Saturday. Nighttime work between 22 Street S.W. and Crowchild Trail S.W. 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays.
  • Sidewalk closures: temporary, in sections, along both sides of 50 Avenue S.W.
  • Road closures: 50 Avenue will be fully-closed to traffic in sections. Short nighttime closures will impact access to Crowchild Trail.
  • Detours: Temporary road detours will be in place using residential side streets and will include parking restrictions. Temporary walking and wheeling detours will safely accommodate pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Increased construction traffic.
  • Dust, noise and vibrations. Efforts will be made to minimize disruption.
  • Transit changes: Temporary stops and route change (#7 and #13) along 50 Avenue S.W. Visit calgarytransit.com for trip planning support.

Outreach and engagement

Public input helped with the final design of the 50 Avenue S.W. improvements, including intersection design, traffic calming, pedestrian safety, cycling facilities, and construction planning.

  • Public engagement started in 2017.
  • Two public information session were held:
    • March 26, 2025, sharing Phase 2 plans with the community
    • June 8, 2026, sharing construction information with the community

We used the community feedback, combined with the data from the 2017 transportation corridor study, operational history and current plans for the Glenmore Athletic Park to develop the design being built today.
