Property tax payment options

There are many ways to pay your property tax to The City of Calgary.  You can pay your property tax month-by-month or all at once.

Join Tax Instalment Payment Plan (TIPP) to pay your property tax month-by-month. We’ll withdraw your payment from your bank account each month.

Other payment options

Pay your entire bill before the due date using any of the methods listed below.

  • Each property has a unique roll number. Ensure you pay towards the correct one.
  • We recommend paying early to account for any delays (e.g., online banking processing times).

Online banking, phone payments, and ATM / bank machine:

  1. Add “Calgary Property Tax” as the payee.
  2. For the account number, use the 9-digit roll number from your property tax bill. Don’t include any spaces or dashes.
  3. Follow your bank’s instructions to complete the payment.

In-person at the bank:

  1. Take your tax bill(s) to the bank.
  2. Ask the bank teller to register the roll number(s).
  3. Make a separate payment for each roll number/bill you have.

Corporate Cashiers:

You can pay your property tax in-person at Corporate Cashiers in downtown Calgary.

  • We accept cash, cheque, or debit payments (we cannot accept credit cards).
  • Be aware of your daily debit card limit.
  • Avoid long lines by paying early.

24-Hour Deposit Box

We have an outdoor deposit box that you can access anytime.

  • Make cheques or money orders payable to “The City of Calgary.”
  • Deposit your payment before midnight on the due date to avoid late-payment penalties.
  • Do not deposit cash.

We accept cheques and money orders through regular mail or courier services. Please note that we don’t accept cash through either method.

Ensure your payment is complete and signed correctly:

  • Pay to “The City of Calgary.”
  • Write the property roll number(s) on your cheque.
  • Date cheques on or before the due date.
  • Include the remittance part of your bill(s).

Note: If your payment arrives late, we’ll use the Canada Post postmark date. The postmark must be on or before the due date to avoid late-payment penalties. If there is no postmark or it’s unreadable, we’ll use the date we receive it.

Courier services:

Courier deliveries are accepted at either of these locations:

  • Tax Advisory Services Counter Calgary Municipal Building 3rd Floor, 800 Macleod Trail S.E. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • City Hall Mail Room Calgary Municipal Building Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

If you pay principal, interest, and taxes (PIT) to a mortgage company or bank, they will collect property tax with each mortgage payment.

  • Your mortgage holder must inform The City of Calgary to receive an invoice and pay your taxes.
  • You will receive the original tax bill for your records.
  • The invoiced company’s name will appear on your bill.

Important information:

  • If you think you are paying PIT but your mortgage holder’s name isn’t on your bill, contact them immediately to register their interest with The City.
  • If a mortgage holder is named on your bill but is no longer responsible for your tax payment, you must pay the taxes by the due date to avoid penalties.

You can’t pay your property tax directly to The City with a credit card. However, some third-party providers in Canada offer this service.

Important Considerations:

  • At The City, we do not endorse any third-party providers. You’ll need to research and select one yourself.
  • Late payments due to third-party delays will result in penalties. The City cannot guarantee when the payment will be received.
  • Third-party providers may charge transaction fees, adding extra costs for you.

Need a copy of your tax bill or payment receipt?

Always keep your payment receipt as proof of payment. This is important in case there are any issues or discrepancies with your property tax account.

  • Online/Phone/ATM/Bank Payments: Save the receipt from your bank or payment terminal.
  • Mail Payments: Keep a copy of the cheque or money order and the remittance part of your bill.
  • Mortgage Payments: Ensure you receive and keep a statement or confirmation from your mortgage company.

Payments in U.S. funds

You can pay in U.S. funds from an American bank. The exchange rate on the deposit date will apply. If the payment is insufficient due to exchange rate fluctuations or bank fees, penalties will apply to any unpaid tax.

Payments made to the wrong roll number

A $25 fee will be charged if we need to correct payments made to the wrong roll number or an invalid account. If we are unable to redirect the payment to the correct account, it will be returned to the issuing financial institution.
