Items accepted at Community Cleanups

What items are accepted at the Community Cleanups?

Community Cleanups are designed to accept household items that do not fit in your black cart.

Always check with the Community Association hosting the event before attending, as accepted items may vary by location depending on space, capacity and additional vendors on site.

Accepted items (City garbage trucks):

  • Non-donatable furniture (e.g. mattresses, sofas, chairs, desks, dressers, outdoor furniture)
  • Oversized non-donatable household items (e.g. broken blinds, grandfather clocks, taxidermy items)
  • Toilets, sinks, and similar fixtures
  • Cabinetry
  • Broken recreational items (e.g. old treadmills)
  • Lumber from old fences and decks
  • Carpets and rugs
  • Ceramics

What items are not accepted at Community Cleanups?

Not all items can be accepted at Community Cleanups. Some items do not fit in garbage trucks or are unsafe for staff and volunteers to handle.

Not accepted items (City garbage trucks):

  • Car batteries
  • Electronics
  • Small appliances
  • Metal
  • Barbecues
  • Lawnmowers
  • Glass (e.g. windowpanes, glass tabletops)
  • Household appliances containing freon (e.g. refrigerators, freezers)
  • Microwaves
  • Liquids (e.g. including cooking oil)
  • Household chemicals (e.g. gardening, cleaning, automotive chemicals)
  • Household hazardous waste (e.g. propane tanks, paint)
  • Railway ties
  • Sod or dirt
  • Commercial waste
  • Yard waste, or green cart material
  • Recyclables or blue cart material

Household hazardous waste materials can be brought directly to a household hazardous waste drop-off location.

Why is yard waste not accepted at Community Cleanups?

Since the introduction of the Green Cart program, organics and yard waste are managed year-round through regular collection. Residents are encouraged to continue using their green carts and extra yard waste bags for this material.

Are hazardous waste materials accepted at Community Cleanups?

No. Household hazardous waste is not accepted at Community Cleanups, including items such as propane tanks and paint.

Household hazardous waste can be taken directly to a household hazardous waste drop-off location. Visit calgary.ca/hhw for locations and more information.
