For multi-family residents

If you live in an apartment, townhouse, or condo complex, your building is required to provide all residents adequate bins for recycling, compost, and garbage. Please speak to your building manager or landlord:

  • If your building does not have either a recycling and/or a food and yard waste program
  • If your waste area is regularly overflowing or untidy (not enough bins, too much garbage etc.)

If you have contacted your building manager, but a program still has not been provided for your location, or waste issues persist, please contact Waste & Recycling Services by filling out our online service request or contact 311.

Your information will remain confidential and will not be shared with your property management.

Make waste storage, sorting, and removal easy

Convenience is key to creating an easy-to-use recycling and compost program in your home to make it less of a chore.

Set up your in-home bins

  • Purchase divided containers or stackable options.
  • Try over-the-door hanging baskets.
  • Hang a reusable tote on hooks.
  • Utilize your closet area or space under the kitchen sink.
  • Post signs or labels on your in-home waste system to remind you of what is or isn’t acceptable.

Transporting your recyclables

  • Use a tote or box to carry recyclables from your home to the building’s shared recycling bin.
  • If you use a plastic bag, empty the contents directly into the bin.

Composting tips

  • Buy a kitchen pail for your food scraps or reuse a container such as an ice cream pail.
  • Choose something that fits easily under the sink to save counter space.
  • Do not use plastic bags.
  • Use certified compostable bags, available at all grocery stores, or paper bags.
  • Rinse your kitchen pail regularly to minimize odours.
