Drought
Current conditions - Oct. 15, 2026
Calgary’s water supply is healthy for this time of year with water demand following normal seasonal trends, declining as temperatures cool.
Our system infrastructure is being closely monitored and readied in anticipation of the connection of new Bearspaw South Feeder Main this November. More information on the factors influencing these conditions is provided below.
Our next update will be provided in November 2026.
What we're monitoring
We monitor a range of factors to help ensure a reliable water supply for our growing city, and to guide decisions about whether water restrictions are needed and, if so, at what level.
Supply
Water supply is normal for this time of year.
- On-stream reservoir storage in the Bow and Elbow River watersheds is at a normal level for this time of year. The Glenmore Reservoir is being kept full in preparation for the upcoming Bearspaw South Feeder Main connection work, when it will need to supply a larger-than-normal share of The City's drinking water.
- River flows are within the normal range for this time of year.
- We are monitoring the developing El Nino conditions and emerging outlook for 2027.
What influences the amount of water available in on-stream reservoirs?
The volume of water available in the Bow basin’s reservoirs is actively managed to balance flood and drought risk using measurements and forecasts of snowpack, rainfall, and water use.
Demand
Water use is within the typical seasonal range.
What factors influence water demand?
The amount of water people typically use is driven by temperatures, rainfall and the current level of dryness.
Infrastructure
Water system can meet current demand; The Bearspaw South Feeder Main is operating at a reduced capacity and continues to be closely monitored.
Beginning November 4, crews will undertake the final steps of construction on Calgary's new Bearspaw South Feeder Main by connecting it into the existing water system.
As a result, city-wide Stage 4 Outdoor Water Restrictions and indoor water conservation will be in effect starting November 4 for approximately four weeks.
