Bylaws related to fire hydrants
For safety reasons, the Calgary Fire Department needs clear access to fire hydrants near your property. You can't have anything blocking them, like hedges, shrubs, trees, fences, or stored items. There should be a clearance of two (2) metres on each side and one (1) metre on the side farthest from the street. Nothing can be built there, only grass planted.
Fines for violations of these regulations are $1,500.
Fire hydrants regulations are found in section 41 of the Water Utility Bylaw. This is an overview of these regulations. Please refer to the actual bylaw for more detailed information. Original copies of the bylaw are available at the City Clerk's office.
