144 Avenue N.W. Improvements: Construction Update
I would like to provide you with an update regarding the 144 Avenue N.W. Improvements project (Sage Hill Drive to 24 Street N.W.). Construction commenced back in March and will will continue through fall 2024.
Work is progressing with underground utility installations at the intersection of Symons Valley Road and 144 Avenue N.W. Crews have also begun work on the Nose Creek realignment.
A slight schedule adjustment has been made, based on additional time that was required for crews to complete unexpected volume of rock excavation for deep utility installations, as well as the consistent rainy weather conditions in June 2022.
It is now expected that the current intersection closure will be in effect until approximately the end of August. Existing detour routes and signage will remain in place until the intersection is fully re-opened to traffic.
A temporary detour road will be constructed on the east side of the intersection to maintain access for southbound and northbound traffic on Symons Valley Road N.W. During this time, 144 Avenue N.W. will be closed between Sage Hill Drive and Symons Valley Road N.W., with local access only.
The Transportation Engineer team will work with Calgary Roads to install adequate signage for this detour. Their design is ongoing and I'll share the detour plans when available. In addition to regular detour signage, Roads will install three message boards to provide advance warning for the traveling public. Access to Symons Valley Ranch and other area businesses adjacent to the intersection will be maintained via detour routes.
The project team will work hard to minimize the impacts to travelers in the area as much as possible. All work will adhere to City of Calgary Noise Bylaw restrictions and all efforts will be made to limit noise impacts to the best of our ability. Weekend and/or evening construction may take place to ensure work is completed as efficiently as possible. Please follow all detour and construction signage posted in the project area, including speed reductions.
Access to area businesses will remain open during construction. Access to the Symons Valley Ranch complex will be maintened via detour routes. Please refer to the detour map below, which indicates two local access points:
Additional project activities will include:
- Various earthworks and site excavations to build the 1.2km extension of 144 Avenue N.W.;
- Construction of a bridge crossing over West Nose Creek; and
- An expansion to the multi-use pathway system further linking to the 5A cycle network.
- Work will adhere to City of Calgary Noise Bylaw restrictions and all efforts will be made to limit noise impacts to the best of our ability. Crews will also work to keep dust and vibration to a minimum during construction. Not all noise, dust or vibration will be able to be mitigated and we apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.
