Every day in Calgary, thousands of people walk, cycle, drive, and roll through our streets, and every one of them deserves to get where they’re going safely. Yet as our city continues to see a troubling number of serious and fatal collisions involving vehicles and pedestrians, one factor shows up again and again: distraction.

Calgary’s three cart system continues to be the foundation of how we manage household waste, but contamination remains an ongoing challenge. Even small mistakes create safety risks for workers and make it harder to turn waste into new materials. We have put together a handy list with resources for anyone who wishes to learn more about what goes where.

I want to share an update on the North Calgary Water Servicing (NCWS) Project, a major piece of infrastructure work underway in northwest Calgary that is critical to supporting both existing communities and future growth. This will expand and strengthen the reliability of our water system by adding capacity and redundancy, and help make sure Calgarians continue to have access to clean, safe drinking water for decades to come.

This spring, the City of Calgary is once again offering complimentary compost to residents as part of its annual compost giveaway. The program is a great opportunity to improve the health of your yard or garden while supporting waste reduction through the green cart program.

The City of Calgary’s rain barrel rebate program is returning in 2026 and is delivered through Green Calgary. Eligible households can receive a $50 rebate per rain barrel, up to a maximum of three barrels per household. Applications will be accepted from April 1 to October 31, 2026, or until available funding is fully allocated.

As warmer weather approaches, many young people across Calgary are looking for opportunities to gain experience, earn income, and take their next step into the workforce. Finding that first job, or even the next one, can be challenging, which is why events like the Youth Hiring Fair continue to matter for young Calgarians and their families.

As Calgary continues to grow, so does the importance of building a healthy, resilient urban tree canopy. Programs like Branching Out play a meaningful role in shaping greener neighbourhoods and supporting long term environmental goals, while also giving residents a direct way to contribute.

As City Council begins work on Calgary’s 2027–2030 Business Plans and Budgets, I want to make sure Ward 2 residents know how and when they can share their priorities. Public engagement is open from now until April 15, and this is an important opportunity for residents to provide input before the budget is finalized.

March is Community Association Awareness Month, and it’s a great opportunity to recognize the people and organizations that quietly, consistently make our neighbourhoods stronger. From seasonal events and recreation programs to advocacy, safety initiatives, and welcoming new neighbours, community associations are at the heart of community life.

On Monday, March 23, 2026, City Council will hold a Public Hearing on Planning Matters to consider a proposed change to Calgary’s Land Use Bylaw related to citywide residential rezoning. I know this is an issue many residents care deeply about, and I want to make sure you have clear information about what is being considered and how you can participate.

As of yesterday, March 9, The Bearspaw South Feeder Main is now out of service to allow for critical reinforcement work that is expected to last approximately four weeks. Stage 4 Outdoor Water Restrictions are now in effect, and residents and businesses are also being asked to reduce indoor water use.
