Graphic Images Notice of Motion
Last week, the Community Development Committee unanimously voted in favour of amending the Community Standards Bylaw to regulate the distribution of graphic images depicting a fetus.
If this Bylaw amendment is approved, it would require flyers with graphic images of fetuses to be placed in sealed envelopes, and to include a viewer discretion warning and the sender’s name and address.
These kinds of images can be disturbing and re-traumatizing for those who have suffered pregnancy loss. As a mother, and as a member of the Ward 2 community, I believe that everyone should be able to view these images at their own discretion.
My sincere thanks to everyone who spoke at this committee meeting, and to those who shared personal, and painful, stories of their own experience with loss. Now that this vote has passed, the next step is for City Council to vote on it, which would effectively make it a bylaw. I expect this to occur on May 9th.
