Preparing Your Home for Winter
As Calgary's winter approaches, it's important to get a head start on prepping your home for the chill. Preparing early can make a big difference in your comfort and safety during the colder months. Here’s how to ensure your home stays warm, secure, in those sub-zero temperatures:
Clean and Maintain Your Furnace:
Schedule a professional inspection and cleaning of your furnace to ensure it's running efficiently. Replace air filters regularly to improve airflow and energy usage. Turn on your furnace to give it a test and see if it is running—the earlier you do this, the better chance you have of getting any necessary repairs in before the autumn rush season.
Check Your Home's Safety:
Ensure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly. Make sure to replace old batteries as needed. Consider having your chimneys and vents inspected and cleaned to prevent potential fire hazards and make sure your home has proper air-flow.
Inspect Your Home's Exterior:
Clean your gutters, trim trees and shrubs, and inspect your roof for any damage or loose shingles. Remember that ice and snow can make any existing damage worse, so it is better to deal with these issues when the weather is warm. Seal any cracks or gaps around windows and doors to prevent drafts and ice buildup.
Insulate and Weatherproof:
Inspect your home's insulation, particularly in the attic, walls, and crawl spaces. Caulk and weatherstrip windows and doors to improve energy efficiency. Make sure there are no holes for mice, squirrels, and other animals to enter into. Conduct regular checks for animal droppings or damage, which is a sure sign that an animal has snuck in to make a nest.
Protect Outdoor Plumbing:
Insulate exposed pipes, faucets, and sprinkler systems to prevent freezing and bursting. Make sure to clear our your sprinklers before the first snow fall to avoid your pipes freezing.
It’s better to prepare ahead of time rather than be caught off guard by the first snowfall of the season. By taking these proactive steps, you can help ensure your home is ready to withstand the harsh Calgary winter, keeping your family safe and comfortable.
