Tips for Fire Safety at Home

Fire safety is always important, but it becomes even more critical during dry weather. This past week, Calgary fire crews have responded to multiple fires at homes across the city, so now is a good time to make sure you are doing everything you can to keep your property safe.

To prevent fires on your property, it’s important to follow fire safety guidelines. This includes not lighting fires in dry or windy conditions, properly extinguishing cigarettes and other smoking materials, and avoiding the use of outdoor equipment that could spark and ignite dry foliage. It is also important to be aware of any fire restrictions in your area and to follow them closely.

Here are some more tips:

  1. Clear away any dry or dead vegetation from around your home, creating a firebreak.
  2. Remove any leaves, branches or other debris from your roof and gutters.
  3. Make sure your outdoor grill, smoker, or fire pit is in a safe location away from your home and not surrounded by dry vegetation. Be sure to keep grills clean.
  4. Avoid using outdoor machinery that could create sparks or heat in dry conditions.
  5. Keep a fire extinguisher on hand and make sure everyone in your home knows how to use it.

In addition to prevention, it is also important to be prepared for a fire. This includes having an evacuation plan in place, preparing a “go bag” with essential items, and keeping important documents in a safe place. It is also important to have working smoke detectors. By taking these simple steps, you can help reduce the risk of fire and keep your home and property safe.
