Bearspaw water main break
What you need to know
We are grateful to everyone in Calgary, Airdrie, Tsuut'ina Nation, Chestermere and Strathmore who have saved water over the past two weeks.
Repair updates
This repair is complete. Thank you Calgary. We are planning additional pipe reinforcement work to start in Spring 2026.
The repair will take place when the flows from the Elbow River and Glenmore Reservoir are higher.
We cannot guarantee that the pipe won't break unexpectedly again. If this happens before we can complete our planned reinforcements, we will move immediately to do some of reinforcment repairs at the same time as the break is being repaired.
During the repair work, water restrictions will be required again.
Repair information will be posted on the Bearspaw South Feeder Main Improvements Project page.
Water quality
Your drinking water remains safe to drink
What you may notice for the next couple of days:
- Cold water may appear cloudy. This cloudiness is common after repairs and should pass after regular water use.
- A strong chlorine smell. Chlorine levels increase during pipe filling to disinfect it. These levels are within the normal operational range for treating drinking water.
If these issues continue, call 3-1-1.
Traffic impacts
Eastbound lanes on 16 Ave. are fully open
Westbound lanes are reopening in phases:
- Inside lane is open.
- Curb lane and right-turn lane remain closed.
We will keep Calgarians informed when the other lanes are safe to reopen.
Protecting the community
Now that the pipe has been stabilized, we’re reviewing all community mitigation measures to decide which ones are still needed. Some will be removed, while others will stay in place.
Steps taken to protect communities
- We removed two segments of the Bow River flood barrier along Montgomery Blvd. N.W. across from Bow View Manor.
- We placed temporary barriers along the Bow River pathway next to Parkdale Blvd. N.W.
- We cleared catch basins, opened outflows to the river and changed manhole covers in a number of areas.
