Bylaws related to recreational vehicles

Parking recreational vehicles (RV) is regulated under the Community Standards and Traffic Bylaws. This includes motor homes, trailers, campers, boats and more. Failure to comply with these regulations may result in fines ranging from $400 to $10,000.

Between April 1 and October 31

If your home has a suitable front driveway, an RV can be parked on your front driveway for three consecutive days. After which it will need to be removed from the area for at least 48 hours.

  • Parked RVs cannot have any part closer than one metre from the sidewalk, or gutter if there is no sidewalk.
  • Parked RVs cannot obstruct intersection corner visibility.

If you don't have a suitable front driveway, an RV can be parked for up to three days on the street in front of your home, followed by 48 consecutive hours that it needs to be off-site, for example, in storage or at an RV park/campsite.

  • Parked RVs cannot block the view of intersections, crosswalks, playgrounds or signs.
  • Parked RVs cannot obstruct the movement of other vehicles.
  • Detached trailers and campers cannot be parked on city streets or alleys.
  • If you have a suitable front driveway, street parking is not permitted between April 1 and October 31.

FAQ

What is considered a recreational vehicle (RV) under Calgary's bylaws?

An RV is defined as a vehicle that provides temporary accommodation for recreational or travel purposes. This includes motor homes, travel trailers, fifth-wheel trailers, campers (whether on a truck or not), tent trailers, boats and trailers used to transport any of these.

How long can I park my RV on my front driveway?

Between April 1 and October 31, you can park your RV on your front driveway for up to three consecutive days, followed by at least 48 consecutive hours off the property. During this period, the RV must be at least one metre away from the sidewalk and not obstruct visibility at the intersection corner. From November 1 to March 31, parking an RV on the front driveway is not permitted.

Can I park my RV on the street in front of my home?

Yes, if you do not have a suitable front driveway, you may park your RV on the street adjacent to your home for up to three consecutive days, followed by at least 48 consecutive hours off the street. Ensure that the RV does not block views of intersections, crosswalks, playgrounds, or signs, and does not obstruct the movement of other vehicles. For more information about street parking visit Calgary Parking.

Are there restrictions on parking detached trailers or campers on city streets or alleys?

Yes, detached trailers and campers are not permitted to be parked on city streets or alleys at any time.

Where else on my property can I park my RV?

You may park your RV in the side yard setback or backyard of your residential property, provided it does not block intersection sight lines. There are no time restrictions for parking in these areas.

What are the reasons for these parking restrictions?

The restrictions aim to mitigate potential impacts on properties and neighbourhoods, such as:

  • Visibility and safety: RVs can obstruct views along streets, affecting the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.
  • Aesthetics: Large or multiple RVs on a property can be out of character with the neighbourhood and negatively impact its appearance.

When did these bylaw changes come into effect?

The updated bylaws regarding RV parking came into effect on April 1, 2025.

Where can I obtain a copy of the related bylaws?

This page is an overview. Please refer to the actual bylaw for more detailed information. Original copies of the bylaw are available at the City Clerk's office.
