Officers are required to report any use of force beyond handcuffing and basic physical control techniques.
Officers’ reports are reviewed by their commanding officer, training officers and a force review officer. These reviews help ensure force is being used properly, and only when necessary and in a reasonable and proportionate manner. They also help us refine our training to respond to emerging trends.
In 2024, CPS officers entered into approximately 575,000 interactions with the public. Use of force was required in 818 of these instances to safely control a person who was resistive or violent towards others, officers or themselves. This means that 0.15 per cent of officer/public interactions, or 1 in 702, resulted in a use of force incident. In 99.8 per cent of officer/public interactions, use of force was not required.
