How The City is conserving water

Many City of Calgary services and operations have adjusted how we work to ensure we can minimize water use to essential water only. 

Parks and golf courses

  • Calgarians will see watering of select sport fields, parks, trees and flowers using non-potable water collected from recent rainfall. As warmer weather is expected, we’re using this water responsibly to ensure we’re protecting areas for Calgarians to enjoy. 
  • In our regular operations, all five City golf course greens are already irrigated with non-potable water sources.
  • Community members may see watering happening in new communities where developers use stormwater (which is non-potable) to irrigate parks and playfields. In addition, non-potable water is also being used by community groups or partners that have an agreement, (Enhanced Landscape Maintenance agreement) with The City for irrigation. The use of this water use has no impact on the City’s water supply.

Pools, arenas and athletic parks

  • All City-operated aquatic recreational amenities are closed, including pools, hot tubs, steam rooms.
  • Showers at all City-operated recreation facilities are closed.
  • Programming at North Mount Pleasant and Wildflower Arts Centres has been adjusted to use as little water as possible.
  • Programs and bookings at ice rinks have been cancelled to reduce water use for ice production and maintenance.
  • Wading pools, spray parks, and outdoor pools will remain closed until restrictions are lifted. You can check real-time status of wading pools and spray parks here.
  • We've turned off all irrigation systems that use potable water. We are using non-potable water in areas where we need to protect new turf.

City-owned buildings and vehicles

  • Facilities have ceased outdoor plant and flower watering, and grass area irrigation for city-owned buildings. 
  • Decorative water features and fountains have been turned off to conserve water for essential use only. 
  • Wash bays for City vehicles are closed. Vehicles will only be washed to comply with environmental, health and safety requirements. 

Operations and construction

  • To avoid additional use of water to wash streets, street sweeping has been postponed. 
  • The City is working with the Calgary construction industry, to open two locations over the next few days on the Bow River to provide non-potable water for construction work. 
    • This water will be free of charge and will be the responsibility of the end user to ensure that water is appropriate for its intended application.
    • The City has the required permits from the Alberta Government to withdraw from the river.
