Earth Day in Calgary

Earth Day in Calgary

In more than 190 countries, Earth Day is celebrated on April 22. More than six million Canadians take part each year by doing activities that help protect the environment.

In 2021, Council approved our Environment Strategy. We are committed to delivering on  Council’s Foundation for 2023-2026, including climate resilience and working towards achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

2026 theme: conscious consumption

Earth Day Canada’s 2026 theme is conscious consumption. It encourages us to buy only what we need and choose durable, reusable or repairable options to reduce waste and our environmental impact, while maintaining quality of life.

Try one action this week:

  • Buy only what you need and choose durable, reusable or repairable options.
  • Reduce energy use and travel where you can (for example, combine trips or use active/transit options when possible).
  • Limit your digital footprint (for example, reduce unnecessary streaming or file duplication).
  • Adopt one sustainable habit you can keep (for example, reduce food waste or choose reusables).

We have and support programs that help people take practical actions at home and in the community, including:

The City’s Nature Challenge

We invite you to take part in the City Nature Challenge

  1. Look for nature in your yard, in your neighbourhood, and in local parks from April 24–27, 2026
  2. Take photos of wild organisms such as plants, fungi, insects, birds and mammals.
  3. Upload your photos to iNaturalist.ca to help showcase Calgary’s biodiversity.

To help protect biodiversity, you can also use iNaturalist to spot and identify invasive species in your neighbourhood.

EarthDay.org and other organizations have resources you can use. Visit Earth Day Canada to learn more about the national media campaign.
