Energy Efficiency Day

Energy Efficiency Day

Energy Efficiency Day is a globally recognized day to learn about how energy is used, how it is wasted and how it can be better used in everyday life.

Energy efficient initiatives help our planet, stimulate job creation, and offer innovative ways for people and businesses to save money.

The City celebrates Energy Efficiency Day on the first Wednesday in October each year.

Best practices

Together we can be energy efficient year-round by adopting energy efficient practices. Here are a few of the ways we can do this:

  • Wash your clothes in cold water

  • Wait for a full load to do the laundry

  • Hang your clothes to dry outside on a line or inside on a drying rack

  • Wait for a full load to do the dishes

  • In the summer, close window coverings to keep your home cool

  • In the winter, open south-facing window coverings to keep your home warm

  • Weatherstrip your home

  • Use a programmable thermostat to adjust the temperature when you’re not home

  • Turn down your thermostat to 17° C (63° F) when you’re not home for more than three hours or when you’re asleep

  • Turn off lights in rooms not in use
