Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant Solar Project
Helping provide clean drinking water with solar power at Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant
A 626.7-kW addition to The City’s solar PV project inventory was completed in November 2017. The project saw the installation of 1,740 LG solar panels rated at 360W. That’s enough electricity to power over 100 average Calgary homes.
The project is expected to achieve a payback within 10 years. This is achieved through avoided utility costs for the water treatment plant.
Delivered at about $1.35M, The City’s investment was $950,000. The project was partially funded through an investment of $400,000 from the Alberta Municipal Solar Program. It is expected the system will generate electricity for over 20 years.
Combined with the Glenmore Water Treatment Plant, over 1.1 million kWh of solar-powered renewable electricity is generated at treatment plants yearly. That’s enough electricity to power 157,000 smartphones for a year.
