Southland Leisure Centre Solar Project
Generating electricity and cost savings with solar energy at Southland Leisure Centre.
In 2015, The City completed construction of a 153 kW solar photovoltaic (PV) system at the Southland Leisure Centre. The project included the installation of 600 solar panels rated at 255 W. This system can generate enough electricity to power 24 average homes in Calgary. It will produce renewable electricity for over 25 years.
The solar photovoltaic (PV) project is designed to produce between 160,000 and 180,000 kWh of power per year. In 2016, the project generated 163,250 kWh of electricity. This offset $24,000 in electricity costs for the facility for the year. The financial returns on the project to date indicate 4.76% internal rate of return and payback within 13 years.
