Revitalizing Downtown - BUMP and Green Line

For the past month, Calgarians can find new murals along the downtown beltline, these eye-catching murals are from the 2022 BUMP Festival. The BUMP Festival partners with a variety of different artists, working to create murals that not only shape the city, but show Calgary as a creative hub for artists through vibrant and meaningful street art located around the city.

BUMP Festivals marketing and communications manager, Priya R, discussed how their program continues to support revitalization, much like the Green Line LRT Project

"Similar to the Green Line, you are creating pathways for more people in the city to interact with each other," said Priya.  "Public art creates a space for dialogue, for all sorts of people to come in and have a conversation about art; it transforms the city."

This season’s BUMP Festival began early this year, completing the world's tallest mural with the help of the legendary German graffiti artist DAIM. DAIM or Mirko Reisser is an internationally renowned artist who has been creating public artworks for 30+ years.

"It would be hard to walk along the Beltline without seeing a BUMP mural," Priya explained.

The world’s tallest mural is a geometric and vibrant piece and can be found on the east wall of Hazelview's First on Tenth (123 10 Ave SW) in the center of the Beltline, just across the CPR tracks from the Calgary Tower. This landmark mural was completed in mid-June and has provided a unique edge to the city skyline.

Green Line has begun early works construction for Phase 1 of the project which includes over $300 million in utility, road, sidewalk, pathway and other infrastructure upgrades. While moving utilities to make way for the Green Line, this renewed infrastructure is in place for future growth and expansion.

The BUMP Festival, now in its 6th year, continues to increase the community vibrancy in the Beltline while evolving Calgary’s image as a creative artist hub.
