Green Line launches construction video series and joins in Eau Claire farewell

Project Update

Calgary Built: the Green Line LRT construction video series

You’ve probably seen some of the downtown work happening to make way for the Green Line LRT Project. Often, it is a small work site with a few lane closures and it can be hard to tell what is actually going on.

Green Line wants to take you behind the scenes to the big and small construction projects that are all part of building Calgary’s next LRT line.

In our first video, we break down the installation of a maintenance hole by ENMAX. Have you ever wondered about those circular plates in the road and, even more interesting, what is down there?

Let our cameras take you on site and watch our first edition of Calgary Built: the Green Line LRT.

Join the Green Line team as Calgary says farewell to Eau Clare Market. Harvard Developments, the property owner, is hosting a farewell celebration to commemorate the Market’s 30 year history.

The event will feature live music, a community market, food truck, games and prizes, and a public mural for people to join in and share their favourite memories.

Taking place on Saturday, May 11, the event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. inside the Eau Claire Market—200 Barclay Parade S.W. Parking will be free on the east side of the building along 2 Street S.W. and in the south surface parking lot.

What’s happening in Ogden?

The 78 Avenue Project in Ogden is a massive undertaking with our construction partner, Calgary-based Graham Construction. Work began in July 2023 and is expected to be complete in summer 2025.

The overall scope of work includes constructing two tunnels at 78 Avenue S.E. and 72 Avenue S.E., as well as upgrading a portion of 78 Avenue from Ogden Road east to the Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) rail line embankment. On the east side of that embankment is an industrial area, with a portion closest to the embankment becoming a new roundabout. This roundabout will be the new entrance into the industrial area, which includes many facilities and the CPKC main campus.

To facilitate this construction, two major embankments were built up just west of the current embankment where the CPKC rail line sits to facilitate a diversion track and move trains away from the areas of construction for the two tunnels. This work included trucking in 90,000 cubic metres of dirt that was then built up in a strategic way that could handle the extremely heavy loads of the freight trains that roll through each day (which can be up to 30 trains!).

Once the project is complete, the current entrance to the CPKC main campus at 69 Avenue S.E. will be closed. For many years, this crossing has been a pain point for people who work in the area because it’s an at-grade train crossing that can leave vehicle and pedestrian traffic at a stand still for extended periods of time. The new, unobstructed entrance at 78 Avenue will provide better and safer access.

The tunnel at 72 Avenue will be for pedestrians to access the other side of the rail line. At 78 Avenue, the tunnel will have two-way vehicular traffic along with a sidewalk on the south side of the road and a shared multi-use pathway on the north side.

Other work taking place along 78 Avenue between Ogden Road and the embankment includes upgraded stormwater and other utility infrastructure and landscaping improvements.

Safety is our top priority, and we always prioritize connecting with the community. In Ogden, we were lucky enough to be able to do both in one initiative!

Members of our Community Relations and Safety teams visited Ogden elementary schools last year to host safety assemblies and organized a poster contest to promote construction safety and encourage safe practices around construction sites.

The results were fantastic and we were happy to share the importance of safety through this great artwork displayed on custom signage at our construction sites. The 78 Avenue Project is essential for construction of the Ogden station and the tracks that will run through the community. Stay tuned for future updates as tunnel construction continues this summer.
