9-1-1 is for emergencies that require immediate assistance from police, fire or an ambulance. Calgary 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Officers are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 

When should I call 9-1-1?

Call 9-1-1 if you need immediate assistance from police, fire, or an ambulance.

Examples of when to call 9-1-1:

  • You or someone else has a life-threatening medical emergency that requires an ambulance (e.g. chest pain, serious bleeding or trouble breathing)
  • You see fire, smell smoke, or your carbon monoxide alarm goes off
  • You or someone else is in a motor vehicle collision with injuries
  • You see or hear fighting, screaming or gunshots
  • You see a crime in-progress such as a break and enter, vandalism, or an assault
  • You see or know of a serious crime that has just occurred including an abduction or robbery
  • You see someone who is driving dangerously
  • You see a downed power line, smell gas, or there is a hazardous materials spill, contamination, or poisoning

If you are unsure if your situation is an emergency, call 9-1-1. It’s better to be safe and let the 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Officer determine if emergency assistance is needed. 

Calling 9-1-1 in other languages

Calgary 9-1-1 is for everyone. If you don’t speak English, Calgary 9-1-1 has access to a translation service available in over 300 languages. Knowing how to say the name of your language in English can help the Emergency Communications Officer get an interpreter on the line as quickly as possible.

Text with 9-1-1 (T9-1-1) service for deaf, deafened, hard of hearing, or speech impaired (DHHSI) community

We offer the Text with 9-1-1 (T9-1-1) service in the Calgary region for deaf, deafened, hard of hearing or speech impaired persons. This service allows members of this community to communicate with 9-1-1 services using wireless-based text messaging at no additional charge.

Initiating a Text with 9-1-1 call during an emergency

If you are a deaf, deafened, hard of hearing or a speech impaired person who requires 9-1-1 services, dial 9-1-1 on your cell phone. You will not need to speak, as the Emergency Communications Officer taking your 9-1-1 call will receive an indicator that tells them that they need to communication with you via text messaging. The Emergency Communications Officer will then initiate text messaging with you to address the emergency. Please note, you must be registered for the T9-1-1 service to initiate a T9-1-1 call.
