Shovels in the ground this year for Green Line’s southeast segment

Council votes yes on the Green Line LRT
Yesterday, Calgary City Council voted yes on getting shovels in the ground this year in the southeast and beginning work immediately on a Functional Plan for connecting into downtown. This decision reflects months of work with the Province of Alberta on a path forward for the largest infrastructure investment in Calgary’s history.
Realizing the significant investments already made over the past decade through 60% design and enabling construction delivery on the SE Segment from Shepard to the Event Centre/Grand Central Station, the start of main construction will mark the most significant milestone in project history.
Concurrent to construction starting in the southeast, The City will begin work on the Functional Plan required for the Downtown Segment to advance design, validate the Province’s cost estimates, understand potential impacts to existing infrastructure and ensure the project is broadly supported by Calgarians prior to starting construction. This work was identified by the Province as outstanding, and the responsibility of The City to undertake.
The City will now work with the Government of Alberta and Government of Canada on approval of an updated Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) business case to ensure all previous funding commitments can be realized and invested into Calgary’s future.

Demolitions in Eau Claire underway
Demolition of Eau Claire Market and River Run Condos began last week and is expected to be complete by June 1, 2025. The scope of work includes the demolition and removal of all above-ground structures, the below-grade parking structures, the building foundations and all vegetation and hardscaping within the project lands.
These lands play a critical role in delivering the Green Line LRT. On January 28, 2025, Council endorsed the shared common vision between the City of Calgary and the Government of Alberta for a south-to-north Light Rail Transit (LRT) program in the City of Calgary that extends from 160th Avenue North through the downtown on 2 Street SW to Seton in the Southeast.

Happy Lunar New Year!
Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year, marks the beginning of the lunar calendar year. Today’s new moon kicks off the Year of the Snake, with more than a billion people across the world celebrating.
With a future station proposed near Chinatown, Green Line has worked closely with the community for many years. We love being part of the Chinatown community, and look forward to participating in the annual Chinatown Street Festival every August.
Happy Lunar New Year!
